Review by Mike Stenhouse

The Road & Track Sports & GT Cars 2006 Annual went on sale in the newsstands in December 2005. These annual editions always include many of the most desirable cars on the planet and are always a great addition to any enthusiasts library.

The 2006 edition includes a comprehensive road test of Peter Brock's personal Amulet Red Superformance Brock Coupe.

Notable quotes:

"The Coupe's race tuned chassis and super sticky tires make for one tenacious handler. So grippy in fact that it set new Road & Track records for both skidpad [1.07g] and slalom performance [76.6 mph]."

"Impressive as the chassis is, fire up the Brock Coupe and it's hard to think of anything but its thundering V-8.  Our Coupe's drivetrain was chosen by its owner, Peter Brock himself. Brock chose an RDI-built aluminum block 427. Output is 566 hp and 563 lb-ft of torque."

"Bolt this fire breathing (literally) engine to the Coupe's chassis and there are few premium sports cars that can run with it. Zero-to-60 takes just 3.5 seconds and the quarter mile, 11.8 sec. at 122.4 mph. The 427's power is simply explosive, each dip of the throttle spitting swaths of asphalt out behind the car."

As has been reported in the Second Strike newsletter, Peter's engine is an RDI built 427 cubic inch Windsor based on the Ford Racing aluminum Z-block.  The engine is fitted with Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads, a Victor Jr. single plane intake, and an 830 cfm Holley HP double pumper. Peter added a custom Burns Stainless exhaust system with side exit. This car rocks!

Comparison to the new Corvette ZO6 and Dodge Viper also in the Annual show how much it rocks.

Brock Coupe Corvette Z06 Dodge Viper
0-60, sec 3.5 3.9 4.2
1/4 mile, sec @ mph 11.8 @ 122.4 12.2 @ 120.7 12.3 @ 118.3
Top speed, mph 204 198 190
Skid pad, g's 1.07 0.99 0.97
Slalom, mph 76.6 69.6 67.8

The posted performance is excellent. However it should be noted that the test was done under less than ideal conditions - 94 degrees, 74% humidity, 350 ft altitude with strong winds. At standard test conditions, the quarter mile would be more like 11.5 @ 128 mph. The 204 mph top speed was recorded by Prototype Three at the factory with the Roush 402RC engine. Brock's RDI 427 has an additional 80 horsepower and a top speed of 210 mph.

The Road & Track Sports & GT Car 2006 Annual is on sale until March, but it you want a copy, get it now. My local Barnes & Noble is already sold out. The article is also in the March 2006 issue of Road & Track.
