The Upcoming Fourth Event

The upcoming fourth event is November 13, 2005 at Carolinas Motorsports Park.

Last November Second Strike had it first track event held in conjunction with Phil Wicks Driving Academy. Twenty four of our folks joined with a like number of Mini Cooper drivers at Carolinas Motorsports Park to have a great driving and learning experience.

The cars were grouped by type (Cobra or Mini) and by driving skill, so everyone got to run in a class that moved at the speed they wanted to run.

On the way to a 180  track mile weekend

On Saturday, we divided the track into two shorter tracks. The Novices took the shorter more technical section appropriate to their experience level. The Intermediate and Expert drivers took turns on the longer faster section. Everyone got all the track time they could handle.

On Sunday, we combined it into the single 2.3 mile track. Later in the day as folks tired and number running on the track dropped, we ran the Cobras and Minis together. It worked very well. Everyone was attentive to waving faster cars past. Passing went quickly, given the power difference, so it was very much like each group running on their own.  Again on Sunday, every one got all the track time they could handle.

The joint event was an unquestionable success. This year we are going to build on that success to offer two events at Carolinas Motorsports Park. In addition, we will for the first time be able to offer events in the Midwest.

As always, these are instructional events. Instructors will be available. Classroom/course instruction is mandatory for everyone as always. Driving instruction is mandatory for novices and available for intermediate and experienced drivers.

There will be other cars at the event. Superformance owners will run in their own run groups provided of course that we have sufficient registrations to fill the run groups, which we expect to do.

The event will be held under the supervision of the Phil Wicks Driving Academy. We are working with the Phil Wicks organization for a number of very good reasons
1. Wicks has good track dates at good tracks.
2. Wicks has track dates all around the country, allowing us to reach more Superformance owners.
3. We work well together. Wicks organizes and runs the events the same way we do (or try to).
4. The event prices are about the same as what we charge with the group discounts available for Second Strike.
5. No matter how badly your day is going, you can always find a Mini to blow the doors off of (just kidding).

You are encouraged to register for the events of your choice and to get your hotel rooms as quickly as possible.

November 13, 2005 - Sunday

The Track

West track - 0.988 miles (on left)
East track - 1.18 miles (on right)
Combined track - 2.235 mile

The challenging and entertaining CMP track is 2.235 miles long with 14 turns (10 right and 4 left) from 33 degrees to 135 degrees. Three of the straights are over 1000 feet, so there is some room to air it out. The section from turn 10 through turn 14 is tight and technically challenging. The section from turn 10 back to turn 14 is fast and exciting. An opportunity to learn and to have some fun on every lap.

CMP has been designed and built with competitor and worker safety as prime parameters and features wide run off areas backed up by sand traps. In the few places where space is tight, tire walls have been constructed.

Carolina Motorsports Park on US 521 / US 601 4 miles south of Kershaw, SC, the closest town. It is 17 miles north of Camden and 45 miles northeast of Columbia.

The Carolina Motorsports Park web site has additional information about the track.

The CMP website includes a track layout and description and a driving instructions, both of which will be very helpful in learning the track. These items have been reproduced and edited here so that you can print them out, study them, and bring them with you.

I will be at all the events if I can get there. Putnam Park will be a challenge because I had surgery on 5/19/2005 and may not be well enough to drive. But I'll try! The event is run by professional staff and will go on with or with out me.

9/6/2005: The last event scheduled for September 25-25 has been rescheduled for November 13-14, which is a Sunday and Monday.

10/27/2005: The event scheduled for November 13-14 is now a one day event, Sunday November 13.
