SAAC-31  AT  A  GLANCE

FRIDAY. The track opens at 8:00 a.m. along with Registration and Tech Inspection. There’s no rush to get into the track unless you’re taking the SAAC-31 Driving School. Then you’ll want to get in and get your car through tech inspection. Swap meet vendors will be setting up early. School starts at 9 am. At 12:30 pm the school takes a one-hour lunch break and because the track isn’t being used we’ll open it to anyone who wants to take some parade laps. Speeds will be strictly limited to 50 MPH and passengers can be taken (no age limit). Cost will be $10 per car, payable when you go out on the track. Everyone will get 5 laps of the 2.5-mile course. At 3 pm  we’ll be holding a live auction of Shelby related literature and memorabilia. This is top-shelf stuff, not a bunch of key chains, Hot Wheels and trinkets. SAAC members with extra “stuff” will be putting it for auction and it will be everyone’s chance to grab that special something they’ve never been able to find. Bring cash. As the auction winds down – about 6 pm – we’ll have a cook-out right there at the track. Tickets will be available on the spot and we’ll all be able to watch auction high bidders chuckle as the sun sink slowly in the west.

SATURDAY. Things start at 8 a.m. when the track opens. The first order of business for those running the open track is to get their cars through tech inspection if they haven’t already. The vintage race drivers meeting is at 8:30 a.m. in the Timing Tower. At 9 am the race cars take to the track as the open track drivers have their meeting. They’re done at 9:30 and the first-timers will stick around for a chalk-talk and safety briefing. The track will alternate between race practice and open track running. At 9:00 am the Concours entrants will have a brief meeting in the Timing Tower. Then the white gloves come out and the judging starts at 9:15 am. The Concours entries will be lined up under a metal portico at the end of the paddock area. Results will be announced at the Saturday evening program and will be posted on Sunday in the concours area. Cars for the other two car shows will begin to assemble on the skid pad as they arrive: Hi-Performance Motors is intended as a display of Cobras, Shelbys and Bosses that reflect the way they could have appeared on a dealer’s lot when they were new. The Shine ‘N Show is for all other cars – modified cars, competition cars, Mustangs of all types, replicas and anything else that the convention is likely to attract. At the 1 pm lunch break, it will be time for Parade Laps. Want to see what the track is like? This is your opportunity. For a measly $10 you’ll get 5 laps at 50 mph. And you can bring passengers. The swap meet will run all day, so you can poke around whenever you have a free minute. You can never tell what you’ll find. At 2 pm a team of judges will evaluate all of the cars on the Hi-Performance Motors lot and pick the most deserving for each year. The open track cars will end their sessions about 5:50 pm and the track closes at 6:30 pm. Just in time for the evening program to get cranked up in Danville, VA, at the Institute Conference Center. It’s only about 15 minutes from the track. Cocktails, dinner and an evening program of guest speakers, along with a special surprise. Don’t stay up too late because 8 am rolls around quickly, and things start up out at the track again

SUNDAY. Everyone will be going back to the track at 8 am. Registration, Tech Inspection and the Swap Meet will all be up and running early. Driver’s meeting will begin at 9:00 am in the Timing Tower as the race cars go out for their warm-up. Look for the Concours entries to go on display for a few hours; they will be parked under the portico at the end of the paddock area. At 10:10 the open track sessions begin. The Show ‘N Shine judging will take place at 10:30 am. Cars parked on the skid pad will be inspected by a group of judges who will make special recognition awards. At 11:10 the vintage races take place. They will be followed by open track sessions. At 1 pm the Ladies’ Driving School will begin, in the Timing Tower. Everyone else will break for lunch at 1:30 pm and as soon as the track is clear there will be Parade Laps – again 5 laps for $10. At 2:30 pm the track goes hot again for the rest of the day. Open track sessions end at 5:30 pm and the track will close at 6:30 pm.
