Summit Point - Summit Point, WV
Tuesday May 3

There
were two time trials (recon lap and three timed laps) at Summit Point today
using the same track but with two configurations. The morning session had
more curve complexes with a well defined front straight for the high speed
bits. The biggest problem was the weather, cloudy off and on with a chilly
drive out in the Cobra (32F - tied the all time low for this date) this
morning and fairly windy. Never took off my coat the whole day. Most of the action happened at the corner that copies the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca (not a very good copy but entertaining) with a fairly high-speed lead-in requiring good energy management throughout with a very late apex at the bottom. Dennis had the Coupe running well but commented before the morning session that the car really needed 20 inch wheels (evidently not available in time) to realize the potential of the motor's big-time HP. The Dodge "truck" was fast as well but that thing is a barely warmed over NASCAR Truck Series deal. Took a look inside and saw brake bias controls for each wheel as well as numerous mechanical linkages to change the suspension settings as needed, bare bones interior, etc., etc. It actually had a Illinois license plate on the front to make it street legal - no doubt put there by a deaf, dumb, and blind DMV weenie at some time in the past. Another interesting entry was the 300C Hemi with only a non-stock racing seat, cage, exhaust, and air cleaner - and custom made 20 inch BBS rims and P-zero rubber band tires (that the Coupe should have had). Stock motor, stock suspension, passengers seat, AC, stereo, and so on - that’s the way to do the 3500 miles between events. For a big car it was pretty smooth - the drivers were all Chrysler engineers. Ran well and remarkably stable - after the suspension took a set. In the afternoon the number of curves was reduced and a back straight formed to get the speeds up a little more. This time the lead-in to the "Corkscrew" was preceded by a replication of the Carousel at the Nring, blind hilltop, car gets some air, at least very light, with a sharp downhill and level braking then slide on to the banked concrete. One unfortunate Subaru WRX didn’t lift late enough and tried to correct just at the crest and wound up in the tires hard - they were still applying superglue and chewing gum as the others left for Hagerstown... After the delay for that shunt, Dennis and the Coupe ran well again as did the others with the familiarity with the track making for smoother runs. After the session everyone packed up and headed north for the rag event at Hagerstown and on to VIR tomorrow. Click here for 2MB film clip of Corkscrew Allen Lusk SP 884 |
